Carl Herrera. The unpublished and scandalous story of domestic sexual abuse and abandonment behind a former NBA basketball star

By Karem Galvez

It was the night of Monday, May 12, 2014, and just finished a basketball game close to the semifinals of Venezuelan professional basketball at the Hermanas González gym in Puerto Ordaz, a city located in the state of Bolívar, in southern Venezuela.

Gigantes de Guayana a Venezuelan basketball team based in Ciudad Guayana, Bolívar state, had been defeated in a first confrontation, with a score of 76-73, which favored its rival, Guaros de Lara.

The players of the Gigantes de Guayana team meditated on their defeat and were on their way to their dressing room, when suddenly a group of armed men burst into the place, who, in a confused incident, placed a young man on the floor. They were police officers and their purpose was to arrest Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina, son of the then coach of the Guiana Giants team, Carl Herrera Alleyne, a former player of the National Basketball Association (NBA) of the United States, who threw blows against the police and with the help of members of the team he managed to hide his son, avoiding capture.

Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina

It was not until hours later that it would be known in the Venezuelan press and on social networks that against Johnatan Víctor Herrera there was a red notice from the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), as he was required by a US court, on a charge of assault aggravated sexual assault against a minor.

Even today, years after that incident, the arrest warrant against Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina remains in force. Carl Herrera, the father of the arrested person, did not take long to complain about the police action, in the same month of May 2014, and speaking slowly, trying to convey calm, declared to the press:

“They arrived armed at a sports arena full of people, they put my son on the floor. They didn’t identify themselves and everyone on that stage knew the boy was my son and that created a lot of confusion. They did not let anyone know why they arrived at the scene. They treated him like a dangerous criminal. That for me was more painful than anything else.”

The coach also tried to justify his son’s behavior, pointing out that he had fallen in love with a «girl» in the United States and that he had not acted in a malicious or premeditated way and that it had only been a mistake:

“My son is not a criminal as many malicious people have wanted to make him see. I’m not here to apologize to my son, but I can say that kids make mistakes. This was not a malicious or premeditated mistake. This happened a couple of years ago. He fell in love with a girl in America. Who has not fallen in love with a person older or younger than one? Those who know my son know that he has a way of being similar to mine. What happened may not have happened, but my son is not a criminal and the police forces acted in a bad way.

Herrera also hinted that the victim’s family had, according to what he assured, good relations with his son.

Carl Herrera Alleyne

The coach also pointed out that his son was not hiding and that he had been in Venezuela for more than two years:

“We were aware that there was a problem, but my son was not hiding. So much so that in a tribute that Giants paid me a few weeks ago, he appears in the photos. If requested, there are ways to proceed, they were able to come to us, not a basketball gym. It seemed like a show.”

Herrera Alleyne also tried to divert attention from the event, attributing it to a sporting matter:

“My son has been here in Venezuela for more than two years and has traveled to different cities and nothing had happened. I don’t want to name or blame anyone, but you have to figure it out: we’re in the playoffs, we’re facing teams that haven’t been in the fight for a long time and want to be. Before there was also a situation in which one of our players was not allowed to enter the country, that was something that had never happened before, everything is a sequence”.

But the facts and testimonies now revealed contradict the statements of the former NBA player. The «girl» referred to by «Amigo», a nickname by which coach Carl Herrera Alleyne is known, was just a 12-year-old girl at the time of being sexually abused by Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina, the son of the coach.

The arrest of the suspect, on May 12, 2014, was frustrated by the quick action of his father and it was not until July 15 of the same year, more than two months after the incident at the Hermanas González gym in Puerto Ordaz. , that Johnatan Herrera Medina was arrested when he voluntarily presented himself at the INTERPOL office in the city of Puerto Ordaz, specifically at the Ports and Airports Division, International Police Directorate, under international red alert notification No. A -3747/5-2012, according to arrest warrants Nos. 1328791 and 1328792 dated December 1st, 2011, issued by the 176th District Court of Harris County, Houston, Texas, the content of which red alert indicates:

The arrest request, with a view to extradition, made by Harris County, Houston, Texas, made it clear that the sexually abused girl was barely 12 years old in 2009, when the abuse began, and that the sexual assaults continued. until 2011, that is, until when the girl was at least 14 years old.

After voluntarily appearing before the INTERPOL office in the city of Puerto Ordaz, on July 15, 2014, Johnatan Herrera Medina was placed at the disposition of the Fourth State and Municipal Court of First Instance in Control Functions of the Criminal Judicial Circuit of the State of Bolívar, based in the same city, imposing precautionary measures to substitute the deprivation of liberty provided for in article 242 (numbers 3 and 4) of the Venezuelan Organic Code of Criminal Procedure, forwarding the file to the Criminal Cassation Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ ) of Venezuela for the consequent purposes.

The Criminal Cassation Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela agreed to notify the Government of the United States of America, through the Venezuelan Ministry of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs, of the peremptory term of sixty continuous days, counted from its notification, to present the formal request for extradition and the necessary judicial documentation in the extradition procedure of Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina, of dual nationality (Spanish and Venezuelan), born in Madrid, Spain, identified with Venezuelan identity card 24978682. The Venezuelan court specified that if the required documentation is not presented within said period, the release of Herrera Medina would be ordered, and consequently the cessation of the measure of personal coercion that weighed against him, in accordance with the provisions of the criminal laws of Venezuela.

In a strange turn of events, on March 19, 2015, the TSJ, the highest court of justice in Venezuela, through a presentation by the presiding magistrate of the Venezuelan judicial body, Maikel Moreno Pérez, decreed the unrestricted release of Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina.

The measure was justified by the fact that the Embassy of the United States in Caracas did not present a formal extradition request against Herrera Medina. The court ruling reads:

… on March eleventh (11), 2015, letter no. 1901, dated March six (6), 2015, signed by VLAYILDI VALERA SÁNCHEZ, Director General of the Office of Consular Relations of the Ministry of People’s Power for Foreign Relations, through which he sent Note Verbale no. 246, dated February twenty-three (23), 2015, from the Embassy of the United States of America, which indicates the following:

We must remember that the arrest request with which the 176th District Court of Harris County, Houston, Texas, requested INTERPOL to arrest Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina in 2011, indicated that the request has no statute of limitations. It is for this reason that Herrera Medina’s name still appears in the INTERPOL database. Given the Spanish nationality of the suspect, even today the Spanish media include Johnatan Víctor Herrera in the list of the 10 most wanted Spaniards by the authorities.

Carl the “Idol»

The biography of Carl Víctor Herrera Alleyne, father of Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina, is the typical story of a man who went from poverty to be one of the most recognized basketball players in Venezuela.

Carl Herrera Alleyne was born on December 14, 1966 in Trinidad, an island country located off the coast of Venezuela. When he was only a few months old, he emigrated with his family to Caracas, where he began practicing basketball at the age of 13, acquiring Venezuelan nationality. He was champion in the NBA twice with the Houston Rockets, in 1994 and 1995, and represented the Venezuelan national team from 1983 to 2002.

In the Venezuelan sports scene, Herrera Alleyne became a kind of respected «idol», having been the first Venezuelan basketball player to become an NBA champion. In 1984 he was selected as rookie of the year in the extinct Special League of Venezuela, then the Professional Basketball League of Venezuela, with the Bravos de Portuguesa team.

He began his student career in the United States at Jacksonville College, a private community college in Jacksonville, Texas. It is the only accredited junior college in Texas that is privately owned and operated by the Baptist Missionary Association of America, with additional financial support provided by the Southern Baptists of Texas, the conservative state convention affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.

Carl Herrera himself has commented on several Instagram posts about how he left the city of Guanare, Portuguesa state, where he lived with his family in Venezuela, and how he was received in the United States:

«Some decisions can profoundly affect our future, one of them was my departure to study in the United States. My economic conditions in Guanare were not good, the league lasted only a few months, the payments were delayed and not enough. . More than once, notebook and coins in hand, I called from a wallet phone to those who could help me find a way to study and play outside of Venezuela. It was not until after a game of Portuguesa against Panteras de Lara in Barquisimeto, which we lost, at the end Gabriel Esta called me because he wanted to tell me something. “Sit down, I have a surprise for you”, he told me showing me the I20 to join Jacksonville College, a university in Texas where he already had a year, I didn’t believe it and I thought it was a joke, “you just have to look for the ticket» he added. The only solution to buy the ticket was to negotiate with the owners of the Portuguesa team, so that they would finance it for me, although they ended up buying the ticket out of fear that I would not play for them again. Say goodbye to the family, tell them that I had to leave and face the doubt «Are you going to leave us?». Explain to them that the goal was to study and graduate so I could come back and work here with a degree teaching, that was the plan. On December 24, 1986, the flight to Dallas started. I boarded the flight, on a weekend and a holiday, without notifying Gabriel or someone in Jacksonville who was already on the way. I remember being alone at the airport at Christmas, sad, leaving my family and not knowing what was in store for me the future, although now we know that it would be the beginning of many good things. What happened when you arrived in Dallas? I ran out of space here, we continue on Friday with the next post.»

Carl Herrera in his time at Jacksonville College in Texas

“Jacksonville College was a great school for life, with a demanding academic and sports training. As I told you before, the daily routine started very early running 3 miles, throwing in the gym, classes, compulsory studies in the library to guarantee having the academic level and being able to play. When I left for the United States I thought that the situation would be easier, but mentally being away from my family in a different culture did not make it so. Sharing efforts with Gabriel Was, Armando Becker, José Echenique, José «Parker» Hernández and Pablo Palacios, during those two and a half years in Jacksonville made it more bearable. Team coach Verton Harton helped me maintain a structure and clear objectives to overcome that stage of my career, understanding that playing and studying was the way to give my family a better future. I remember Coach Harton as a father, many of the things I know about the game I learned from him, how he spoke to me and intuited what I could do, that he took advantage of the opportunity he had and understood that I was there for something. Respect for your coach, never thinking that you know it all, learning from them and letting them guide you is essential in basketball. In Jacksonville I was able to train academically, which I had already started empirically in Venezuela, and obtain my degree in Physical Education for a coach, studies that I continued at the University of Houston and what I will continue to tell you about later.»

“As the end of the 1988-89 season with Jacksonville College neared, I had many offers from NCAA first division colleges and had to make a decision. I made the decision to make three college visits: Oklahoma, UNLV, and Houston. The first one went to Oklahoma. When I arrived on campus it was a beautiful sunny day, they greeted me with their emblems and red everywhere, their star players were Stacey King and Mookie Blaylock in their last year of college. When leaving the visit, a huge snowfall had fallen and the cold was very strong, so it went to the last place on the list due to its climate. When visiting the University of Nevada Las Vegas, UNLV, of coach Jerry Tarkanian, They welcomed me with a limousine, a spectacular bedroom, luxury and lights that characterize this city. But I thought there were many distractions at this university, and I was in the United States to study and graduate. Finally, when I arrived at the University of Houston, I was greeted by pleasant weather, no snow falls, as you can see, an important factor, I had a direct flight to Venezuela at the time and an unforgettable surprise awaited me that had a lot to do with the decision. The university invited a group of Venezuelans and they hid them in the upper part of the gym, when I entered the court I liked it a lot, then I see that the compatriots begin to unfurl a huge Venezuelan flag, I got very excited and thought: here I am. with the Rockets and from where I send you these letters today.»

Carl Herrera Alleyne enrolled at the University of Houston in the 1989-90 season.

He played in Spain for Real Madrid Basketball in the 1990-91 season. Real Madrid Baloncesto is the basketball section of Real Madrid Club de Fútbol. And let’s pay attention to this fact, because that season in Spain would also mark the future of his personal life.

He was chosen by the Miami Heat in the second round (turn 30) of the 1990 NBA Draft.

His rights were traded by the Heat along with Dave Jamerson’s to Houston for Alec Kessler on June 27, 1990.

He signed with the San Antonio Spurs as a free agent on September 29, 1995. He played 41 games and had records of 1.9 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.9 minutes. He was on the injured list twice.

The following season – June 25, 1998 – he was traded to the Vancouver Grizzlies along with the rights to Dominican Felipe López in exchange for Antonio Daniels.

He played four games with the Grizzlies before being released on February 29, 1999 and then signed with the Denver Nuggets on March 3 where he appeared in 24 games for the remainder of the season.

He returned to the Venezuelan Professional Basketball League for the 1999 season with the Bravos de Portuguesa that later became Guaros de Lara. He then played with the Trotamundos de Carabobo in the 2000 season.

At the end of the 2000 season of professional basketball in Venezuela, he was ranked eighth all-time in rebounds (2,560), second in blocks (547), and 20th in points (4,971). He was chosen in the 1989 and 1990 seasons in the All-Star Team of professional basketball in Venezuela.

In 2004 he was part of the Guaiqueríes de Margarita (LPB): where he played 22 games and had averages of 8.7 points and 3.9 rebounds.

In 2012, he entered the Venezuelan National Basketball League as coach of Estudiantes de Guárico, a first division team in the aforementioned league, which to date would be the oldest team to remain active.

In 2013 he was selected as coach of the year in the Venezuelan Professional Basketball League with the Guayana Giants.

In Venezuela, Carl Herrera was a player for the Bravos de Portuguesa (1998-1999), Trotamundos de Carabobo (1999-2001), Delfines de Miranda (2001), Cocodrilos de Caracas (2001-2002), and Trotamundos de Carabobo (2002) basketball teams. ), Guaiqueríes de Margarita (2002-2004), Guaros de Lara (2004-2007), Deportivo Táchira (2007-2008), among others.

In 2016 he was appointed president of the Marinos de Anzoátegui team, until he was fired in 2017. In 2021 he was hired as coach of the Cocodrilos de Caracas team.

Carl Herrea wearing his championship rings from the 1994 and 1995 NBA seasons

Herrera Alleyne has been involved in controversies not only for the international arrest warrant against his son Johnatan, but also for the theft of the two championship rings he won in 1994 and 1995 with the Houston Rockets, an issue for which in 2020 he began a campaign to try to recover the jewels. In 2019 Carl Herrera accused the owner of the Marinos de Anzoátegui team, Carlos Silva, of being a «liar» and acting in bad faith.

«When they contacted me from Marinos, the team already had the problem of the debts with the players Germán Gabriel and Jeleel Akindele and I knew what was happening. The owner, Carlos Silva, called me and asked me to take charge of the team in its entirety and to make the decisions to lead it. I accepted it because it seemed like an interesting challenge, another facet for my career. My intention was to restructure the team and settle the debts, in fact those that were in bolivars we left at zero, ”said Herrera, detailing that repairs were made to the Luis Ramos gym, in addition to the fact that the air conditioning and the bathrooms were fixed. In addition to making agreements with the fans.

«One of my main proposals was to change the Vargas brothers (José and Gregory) because given the economic situation that existed they were not going to be able to play with us either. The idea was to settle the debts with what was received, start the restructuring and be competitive again in the short term, but Silva was afraid of what the fans would say.

«I communicated with FIBA explaining the situation of the team and that we were making movements to be able to pay what was owed. Then I realized that there were contracts far from reality. I mentioned it to Silva and that’s where the disagreements and their estrangement began. Of the nine months that I was in the organization, we only communicated in the first three”, detailed Herrera.

The sexual abuse in Texas

Not all that glitters is gold! This is how the personal life of Carl Herrera Alleyne could be summed up. Far from that «totem» image that has been carved in Venezuela and other countries as a basketball star, a much more complex reality is hidden in his private life.

The story with his children begins in the mid-1990s in Venezuela, where, from his relationship with Maritza Medina, Alex, his eldest son, was born. The couple moved to Spain in 1990. A photograph from the Spanish news agency EFE, from the time, recalls the arrival of Carl Herrera Alleyne on July 5, 1990 at the Barajas airport, in the province of Madrid, prior to the start de Herrera in NBA teams. The same afternoon of that July 5 Herrera would be presented as a new player of the Real Madrid basketball team.

That same year, in which he also had a brief internship with the Miami Heat, he would be born in Madrid, also a product of Carl Herrera’s relationship with Maritza Medina, his son Johnatan Víctor Herrera Medina, today wanted by INTERPOL.

But the birth of his son Johnatan was not the only important milestone in Herrera’s life in that busy year of 1990, as he decided to separate from the mother of his first two children and start a new relationship with a Spanish citizen, with whom in the following years he would move to the state of Texas, in the United States, where the basketball player would play first with the Houston Rockets (1991-1995) and then with the San Antonio Spurs (1995-1998).

In 1993, in the city of Houston, Texas, just one year before becoming champion with the Houston Rockets, and as a result of Carl Herrera’s relationship with his second wife, Shaya Herrera was born. From that same relationship Sarah would also be born, years later.

While «Amigo» triumphed on the NBA courts with the Houston Rockets, first his son Alex and then Johnatan manifested inappropriate sexual behavior.

A person, an exceptional witness, very close to the Herrera family, who did not want his name mentioned for this story, for fear of retaliation that his family could suffer, recounts unpublished events that occurred in the Herrera home in Texas.

«Witness One», as we will call that person from now on, reveals that for many years he preferred not to tell the story, because he thought that no one would believe him, given the former NBA player’s status as a sports star. But, now with much more value, «Witness One» ensures that the former basketball player continues to defend the innocence of his two eldest sons, despite the atrocities committed by them.

He explains that Alex and Johnatan lived with their sisters Shaya and Sarah, and their father’s second wife, at the family’s residence in Texas, where the situation became unbearable. «Witness One» assures that the fact that the former basketball player is defending his children is «disgusting» and it is time to tell the truth, since «Amigo» has known for years that his two oldest children have been child abusers.

«Witness One» personally knows the girl abused by Johnatan Herrera. But she was not the only one sexually abused, she assures that Johnatan and her brother, Alex Herrera, also abused her sister Shaya Herrera throughout her childhood, which is why today Shaya suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and is treated by therapists.

According to «Witness One», «Amigo» was informed about the abuse suffered by his daughter Shaya, but he preferred to continue defending his sons Alex and Johnatan and distance himself from his daughter.

«Witness One» points out that Johnatan and Alex are also suspected of having abused other girls, but that the brothers’ father has preferred to look the other way because, in his opinion, the former basketball player «is not the hero that everyone thinks he is» .

«Witness One» continues, pointing out that around 2005, when Shaya was approximately 12 years old, the Herreras’ daughter tried to talk to a relative about the behavior of her older brothers, but Shaya’s relative said: «Oh, that’s happened to me before too, sometimes it just happens.”

The incestuous abuse suffered by Shaya began in Houston, in the Sugar Creek neighborhood, in the home that the family knew as «La Casa Grande», after «Amigo» played with the Houston Rockets (1991-1995). From there the family moved to San Antonio, Texas, where his father would play for the San Antonio Spurs. In San Antonio the abuses by Alex continued.

In San Antonio, Texas, Carl’s fourth daughter, named Sarah, was born.

The first time Johnatan’s inappropriate behaviors began to manifest was when Johnatan and Shaya went to play at their neighborhood best friend’s house and there were other children there. Johnatan turned off the lights in a large closet, where he was playing with his sister and other boys, and started touching Shaya in front of the others. Other children who were there told their parents what happened and the mother of one of them had a conversation with Shaya’s mother, who preferred not to believe the story. Then nothing happened and the abuse by both of them continued until Shaya was in the sixth grade of elementary school. At that time, one day the police surrounded the Herrera house. The house had been robbed and vandalized by one of Alex’s high school friends. The trigger for the event was that Alex, who by then must have been around 18 years old, had taken off his clothes and waited naked in the bed of his father’s second wife. When Shaya’s mother arrived, she horrified she kicked him out of the house and Alex, out of revenge, sent a friend to rob and trash the house.

The second wife of «Amigo» tried to tell the basketball player but he did not believe her.

The former NBA player moved to Venezuela to attend professional commitments, while his children and his second wife remained in Texas. It was then that Carl began an affair and began to be unfaithful to his now wife, Betsa García-Herrera, without his second wife knowing anything for years. The former basketball player stopped paying child support and the separation from his second wife also led to them losing their home in San Antonio, as they could not continue paying for the property, having to move back to Houston. Shaya and her mother moved to a family friend’s house and only then did the older brothers stop abusing the athlete’s daughter, although the Herrera girls continued to see Johnatan.

Carl Herrera with his current wife Betsa García-Herrera

After the separation of Carl and his second wife, Alex and Johnatan moved in with another friend of the Herrera family. There Alex began to abuse the eldest daughter of the family who had received them at home. The abused girl was under 16 years old. Alex ended up stealing from the girl’s mother, who reported him and had him taken to prison.

Later, Johnatan began to have a relationship with the youngest daughter of the family that had offered them their home and this began when she was at least 12 years old.

The family of the abused girl denounced Johnatan and according to «Witness One» presumes; Thanks to Carl’s contacts, Johnatan managed to flee the United States to Venezuela.

It was not only Shaya, but also other young girls who were victims of lewd groping who to date have not spoken about what happened. Alex would throw Shaya into a bathtub when they entered her room and touch her inappropriately and lewdly rub against her, while hardly anyone in the family noticed, «Witness One» noted.

Years have passed and nobody has done anything against Johnatan and Alex. Meanwhile, the Herrera family in Texas was destroyed and Shaya, Sarah and their mother ended up drifting apart.

In 2014 Carl was shot during an assault on a restaurant on the island of Margarita, in Venezuela. The basketball player, then 48 years old, was injured by two criminals who shot him while he was having lunch. The assailants allegedly tried to steal some belongings. It was there that his son Alex tried to contact his sisters through Facebook. But one of them threatened to call the police, recalling the abuse he had committed and the destruction of the family home. Alex, however, acted as if he knew nothing about it.

«Witness One» presumes that Alex is free and living illegally in the United States. Regarding Johnatan, he assumes that he is in Venezuela, from where he cannot leave, given the INTERPOL order against him.

«Witness One» thinks that «Amigo» only prefers to talk about himself and defend his sons over anything else. The basketball coach still denies the sexual abuse committed by his children or that his daughter Shaya was a victim of her own older brothers. He assures that «Friend» only cares about his legacy in basketball, because he has not been there when his children have needed him. He stopped paying child support. When their daughter Shaya was a teenager, Herrera’s second wife had to take up to three jobs to try to pay the household bills, but even then, they couldn’t make ends meet.

Shaya was hospitalized at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston due to unknown fevers, which doctors suspected could be cancer. But Carl’s daughter never received a visit from her father, and “Amigo” didn’t help pay the medical bills either.

About “Friend”, “Witness One” assures: “Everyone thinks he is an incredible guy, but he has never been there for his family and due to his absence and negligence horrible things have happened that he simply acts as if nothing had happened to protect his family. legacy… To this day, the only thing that matters to him is his games and his training. And his wife supports him because she is a gold digger who literally broke up a family…” «Witness One» only hopes that the truth about «Amigo» and his «monstrous children» will be known.

«Witness One» assures that he has decided to tell everything that happened in the Herrera home so that child molesters, such as Alex and Johnatan, do not continue freely around the world hurting innocent girls. He thinks that people should listen to the victims and know how painful it can be for them, since it is something that can affect them throughout their lives, being something that despite the years, the victims can take wherever they go, waiting for some day to be freed from that hell that they have had to live.

We sent questions to Carl Herrera Alleyne on one of his social media accounts seeking comment for this story, but received no response.
